What is Somatics?
Somatics is a safe, gentle, and effective method of eliminating chronic muscle pain for the long term. It is the only sensory motor training method that teaches you to reverse the root cause of most chronic muscle pain and gives you strategies to reduce muscle tension and pain in the future. It is unique in that it uses the brain, the central control system of the muscles, to relearn movement patterns that will serve you. You are taught, through simple movements, how to relax the muscles that contribute to your pain.
It is scientifically-based sensory motor training that teaches you how most chronic muscle pain develops, and what to do to restore full nervous system control of both muscles and movement.
What caused my muscles to be tight and painful in the first place?
When our muscles become chronically tight, this is called Sensory Motor Amnesia. It’s like the brain has forgotten how to control the muscle. This happens due to accidents, injuries, surgeries, and on-going stress. It can also happen through repetitive movement patterns.
All humans learn movement through practice. When we first learn, it is slow, awkward, and requires lots of concentration. The more we practice, the more smooth, easy and automatic it becomes. The brain doesn’t need to store this information in the conscious part of our brain anymore, so it is moved into the unconscious part of our brain so we can focus on other things, like planning a trip, or learning a new game, or organizing our work week. But sometimes we learn a “bad” movement pattern, e.g. holding our shoulders tight while we type, and because this is practiced, it becomes familiar and easy, automatic and normal. And sore. This is Sensory Motor Amnesia.
How does one gain control of muscles so they are not tight any more? By relearning the movement in the sensory-motor center of the brain. This is Somatics: learning movement patterns to remind the brain what it has forgotten.
This is different from bodywork, such as yoga, massage, chiropractic, physiotherapy, etc. because the muscles only move when the brain tells them to. Altering the muscle through manipulation, stretching, strengthening, injection, etc. will not change the root problem. It may provide temporary relief, but the issue rears its head over and over again. It is only through the brain that you can change and control the muscle again.
